Deniliquin Outreach Chemotherapy Service Project

This project aims to establish a best practice, shared care model of chemotherapy service at Deniliquin Hospital.

Background

In April 2010, Greater Southern Area Health Service (GSAHS) - Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) were successful in applying for a Primary Care & Cancer Specialist Shared Care Model Grant from the Cancer Institute NSW to establish a best practise, shared care model of chemotherapy at Deniliquin hospital for the management of oncology patients between Albury Wodonga and Deniliquin in collaboration with the Medical Oncology team at Border Medical Oncology. The outreach chemotherapy service will be supported as an outreach service by the Oncology team at Albury Wodonga Health-Albury campus.
Hume Regional Integrated Cancer Service (HRICS) were approached to provide the project team to manage phase 1 of the model development to be completed by 30th June 2012.

Proposed Model

This outreach chemotherapy service aims to:
  • Increase access for rural patients to a local treatment service that assists in supporting patients throughout their cancer journey
  • Reduce the financial burden for patients and carers and the health system by reducing travel costs and the need for accommodation away from home
  • Reduce patient isolation from supports to improve outcomes including quality of life and satisfaction with care
